The United States has the largest wind energy market globally. When comparing installed capacity worldwide, the U.S. is number one and has surpassed Germany. In 2009, 9,922 MW of new capacity were installed in the US, which represents a growth of 39% and another installation record. According to the wind industry, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the dedication to renewable energy of the Obama administration were key drivers for the explosive growth in 2009.
In regard to wind energy, Texas is the most important state in the U.S.. According to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) there is a cumulative wind energy capacity of 9,410 MW installed in Texas, which is more than twice the capacity of the next ranking state, Iowa (3,670 MW). In regard to potential wind energy resources, Texas is ranked second.
