Renewables Definition - Any energy resource that is naturally regenerated over a short time scale and derived directly from the sun (such as thermal, photochemical, and photoelectric), indirectly from the sun (such as wind, hydropower, and photosynthetic energy stored in biomass), or from other natural movements and mechanisms of the environment (such as geothermal and tidal energy).
Renewable energy does not include energy resources derived from fossil fuels, waste products from fossil sources, or waste products from inorganic sources.
Policy Positions - The Texas Renewable Energy Industries Association (TREIA) will promote development of renewable energy and policies that will expand markets and allow all Texans access to renewable energy. TREIA supports policies aimed at achieving the following renewable energy objectives:
-
Texas should strive to achieve at least twenty-five percent of its total energy consumption in the form of renewable energy by 2025 with no net increase of total greenhouses gases released to the atmosphere over 2000 levels.
-
Renewable energy benefits should be recognized and incorporated in the implementation of any pollution mitigation program.
-
Regulatory processes and transmission grid improvements associated with renewable energy should be expedited.
-
Metering options and interconnection requirements that simplify usage of renewable energy and reward its distributed generation benefits should be encouraged.
-
All retail electric customers should have access to renewable energy power options that clearly reveal energy generation resource content.
-
The valuation of renewable energy should recognize its environmental and economic development benefits.
-
Renewable energy development and usage should be encouraged by favorable sales and property tax treatment, and other incentives.
-
All units of government should exercise leadership by making it a priority to purchase energy derived from renewable resources wherever possible.
